Help my Unbelief

Mark 9:14-29
The father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” – Mark 9:24 (NRSVUE)
We were told by the doctor that our two-year-old daughter had severe anemia and that we needed to take her to the hospital for further tests. I was frightened! Were we going to lose her? I tried to pray, but the whole time doubt and unbelief conquered my thoughts. The only prayer I was able to say was from Mark 9:24, “Help my unbelief!”
I opened my Bible and read the whole story about the father and his child who was having seizures, and something occurred to me: the focus of this story was not the sick child but the despairing father! And Jesus met him with love and understanding. The child was healed in spite of his father’s unbelief. This story made me feel at ease, and I put my child in God’s loving hands. God took care of her, and today she is 52 years old and a mother to six wonderful children.

Dear Lord, your love has no limits. Thank you for your forgiving and healing grace. We pray in the name of Jesus who taught us to pray, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matt. 6:9-13, KJV).
