Scripture Union Daily Guide – 29 November 2025 | OUTLINE
There is no one who is sinless. David was an adulterer and murderer. Abraham was a liar and Jacob, a cheat. However, they learnt to return to the Lord in genuine repentance and received the fulfilment of God’s promise in Isaiah 1:18 and 1 John 1:8-9. This was not the way of life of God’s people (Jeremiah 8:5-6). Their leaders did not make repentance easy for them either. The Scribes did not believe in the Law they taught the people.
The priests and prophets preached what the people wanted to hear, not the total truth of God’s word. Is the Church today any better? Do our pastors have the courage to proclaim God’s judgment on sin or, fearing the loss of their key members, ‘soften’ their message appropriately (Jeremiah 8:8-12)? (See the admonition Paul gave to Timothy as a pastor in 2 Timothy 4:1-4.) The people hence failed to recognise their sins, return to God in penitence and seek His forgiveness and mercy. Consequently,
God’s judgment came upon the people. Notice the punishment God inflicted on them (Jeremiah 8:9-15). Severe, isn’t it? God’s children must not presume on His goodness. He is patient and merciful, but He is also holy and just. See also Galatians 6:7-8.
Notice Jeremiah’s grief for the state of his people, particularly the women, and the land (Jeremiah 8:18-22). How concerned are you about the plight of teenage girls and the increasing starvation and lawlessness around you?
