The Words We Speak

Today’s Reading
Ephesians 4:29-32
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. – 2 Timothy 2:16 (NIV)
One of my former co-workers had frequent outbursts of anger in the workplace — throwing papers, muttering curse words, and lashing out at others. As recipients of such behavior, another co-worker and I began talking negatively about her. For weeks we grumbled together about this co-worker.
Then one afternoon, as I began to complain about a recent outburst I had observed, my friend cut me off and said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t want to speak negatively about her anymore.” My surprise quickly turned to embarrassment. My friend’s comment made me realize that I had been participating in workplace gossip. We agreed to refrain from speaking negatively about our co-worker and instead focused on her many wonderful qualities.
While talking about a co-worker or complaining about our boss may seem innocent at first, the byproducts of such talk are far from innocent. Seeds of resentment, bitterness, and anger begin to sprout in our hearts when we engage in such talk.
While the transition from speaking negative words to uplifting words about my co-worker didn’t change her behavior or prevent future outbursts, it changed my heart and gave me a greater sense of contentment and joy.
