Today’s Reading
Psalm 119:18-20
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. – Psalm 119:18 (NIV)
As I neared the age of 62, I observed a marked decline in my night vision. I experienced blurred vision and sensitivity to light and its glare. My ophthalmologist explained that I had developed cataracts — a condition affecting the eye that causes clouding of the lens. If not treated, it leads to a gradual progression of vision problems that may result in vision loss. After some hesitation and much prayer, I opted to go ahead with cataract surgery on my left eye. When the patch was removed from my eye after surgery, I was amazed at how well I could see. I have since had surgery on my right eye as well.
Psalm 119:18 has reminded me that there are times when I may need the Lord to correct my spiritual vision as well. Just as my physical vision became dull over time, my spiritual vision can also become blurred when I fail to talk to God or spend time studying God’s word regularly. Like the surgeries on my physical eyes, having my spiritual vision corrected can enable me to see both the good and the not-so-good parts of my life of faith. May God open our eyes and renew our spiritual vision so that we can see clearly what God has for us to do.
