The joy of all parents is to see their children grow steadily from infancy to adulthood. Where growth is not visible after a few months, it can lead to serious anxiety. What evidence of spiritual immaturity is outlined in this passage? See Hebrews 5:12-13 and Hebrews 6:1-2.
Growth is crucial to our Christian life. It provides the basic evidence that we are alive in Jesus and that we have life. How then can we grow in faith? Growth comes through the teaching and studying of the word of God. While Pastors and teachers must facilitate members’ growth in the understanding of the faith, Christian maturity comes through daily personal meditation on God’s word. Then we will no longer rely solely on what our pastors or leaders say but discern God’s truth and stand firmly on it in the face of difficulties anywhere we find ourselves. What are the signs of spiritual maturity (Hebrews 5:14; cf. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3)?
Growing in our understanding of the Christian faith is also important to save us from falling away from the faith (Hebrews 6:3-6): “We will move forward to further understanding. For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened … who then turn away from God…” (NLT). Older versions use the word “apostasy”. So, we need to move forward in our understanding of the faith to save us from falling away. Such is the importance and value of Christian growth!
