TOPIC: Jesus the perfect High Priest
Opening Prayer
Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
Scripture Reading
Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 5:1-10
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[a] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Heb. 5:1-10
1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,
“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.”[a]
6 And he says in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Scripture Union Daily Guide – 6 October 2025 OUTLINE
Who is a priest or a high priest and what are his duties and functions (Hebrews 5:1-3)? If the duty of a priest is to bring people close to God, why do you think Jesus is the perfect High Priest? (Read Hebrews 5:8-9; also Hebrews 4:14-15). God has designated Jesus to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Like Melchizedek (see Hebrews 7:3), Jesus is eternal (see Colossians 1:15). Jesus is the perfect High Priest because He has entered heaven (Hebrews 4:14), and He is able to grant access to the very presence of God to all who believe in Him, to present our requests or petitions to the Almighty Father (Hebrews 4:16).
On the cross of Calvary, something of eternal significance happened: when Jesus gave up His spirit, “the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two” (Matthew 27:51). The entrance into the holy of holies was opened. Only Jesus gives us access to the very presence of God. This is our assurance that God hears the prayers of the believers. (Read Hebrews 8:1,2,6.) In Jesus, we have the perfect High Priest who appears for us in the very presence of God to present our petitions. In Jesus, we have the assurance that “the Lord hears our prayers.”
