Scripture Union Daily Guide – 4 September 2025 OUTLINE
We have here a picture of people who were thinking that they were better than their forefathers (Matthew 23:29-30). Unfortunately, they did not know what it meant to be the natural descendants of those wicked forefathers. They needed to repent to be different from them (Matthew 23:31,32).
Note the metaphors Jesus used here to directly challenge them (Matthew 23:33). This was followed by a prophetic utterance (Matthew 23:34). Not only Jesus but many of Christ’s disciples were also, in line with this prophecy, flogged unjustly and brutally murdered – James, Stephen, Paul, are examples. “The dog that is set to get lost will not respond to the hunter’s whistle”.
Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD. Jesus came first for the nation of Israel, but He was not welcome just as the prophets who came before Him (Matthew 23:37-38). The Pharisees and the Scribes chose not to listen to Him. God deserted Israel and gave it over to the enemies as a punishment (Matthew 23:38).
The word of God is proclaimed in different ways all over our continent. We also hear it clearly as we read and meditate on the Bible each day. Unless we listen attentively and act upon these words, we risk the same condemnation as Jerusalem.
And So
Except we repent we’ll face the same condemnation as the Pharisees and Scribes faced.

HYMN: O LOVE THAT WILT NOT LET ME GO
1. O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
2. O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
3. O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
4. O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
Closing Prayer
O Love that will not let me go; I rest my weary soul on Thee (George Matheson).
