Today’s Reading
Philippians 4:10-13
10 I rejoice[a] in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me but had no opportunity to show it.[b] 11 Not that I am referring to being in need, for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
KEY VERSE: “Surely I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NRSVUE)
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I knew I would soon experience financial hardship. The second year of graduate school was approaching, and payment on a large loan was awaiting me. Interest rates and fees for tuition loans were high, and I could not find a stable job for the summer.
Growing up, I always heard, “God will provide” but never thought much of it because I had been blessed not to have to face financial difficulty. But now that this dark cloud loomed over me, I felt vulnerable, helpless, and desperate. I found myself reaching out to God for help but realized God was not going to provide me with an instant, miraculous solution to my problem.
Soon enough, I was offered an opportunity as a paid musician for weekly church services. Then I found a scholarship to apply for. I also held a large garage sale. I discovered that God was providing me with small, open doors and nourishing my creativity to find new ways of earning what I needed.
Despite lingering worries, I found myself happier than ever after deciding to turn to God. I began trusting God to provide. I know that God will continue to provide in unexpected ways and will always be my source of strength.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, may we ask for help when we need it and open our eyes to what you have already given us. Amen.
Thought for the Day
God will provide, but not always how or when I expect.
Prayer Focus
Students facing financial hardship
