Opening Prayer

Bible Text
Matthew 19:1-12
Meditation Question
► Q8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?
Jesus has many lessons for us on marriage in this passage. 1. Marriage is an institution set up by God Himself right from the time of creation. It was not an invention of man (Matthew 19:6; Genesis 2:18-24).
2. It is between a man and a woman. This is part of the Creation covenant (Matthew 19:4). and not a matter of human opinion which depends on majority vote. It does not vary from one culture to another or one generation to the next.
3. It is meant to be a life-long union (Matthew 19:6). “Therefore, marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.” (Anglican Book of Common Prayer)
4. Under certain unfortunate circumstances, divorce may be permitted (see Matthew 19:9). It is not God’s will for any couple but a recognition of human misconduct.
5. God does not call everyone, man or woman, into marriage. To remain unmarried is a gift from God (Matthew 19:10-11; 1 Corinthians 7:7), but it is not an easy gift to accept (Matthew 19:12)! Such people, therefore, deserve special respect and support from the church of God.
