Judges 18:1 is alarming as illustrated throughout the book of Judges (also Judges 17:6; Judges 19:1; Judges 21:25). Priests and Levites who should teach/model God’s word instead indulged in idolatry. Was this ignorance, rebellion, or backsliding? Since Judges 1:34, Dan’s tribe hadn’t settled yet. Were they living among other tribes, wandering aimlessly, or facing resistance? Samson was from the tribe of Dan, but his people were still seeking a place to settle (Judges 18:1). Having one prominent person in a group doesn’t make everyone buoyant.
Dan sent five warriors to spy out the land. Warriors would know how to mingle, while focused on surveillance and reconnaissance (scouting), able and ready to defend themselves even amidst trouble. They would also know what to look out for toward the forthcoming battle, for caution and for advantage. God warns us repeatedly to be alert and ready, watchful, and prayerful if we must prevail as the devil rages non-stop in many ways.
This idolatrous priest predicted success for the trip in the Lord’s name. Relieved, they proceeded and succeeded. This often confuses people, when ungodly people predict good outcomes. They think it’s authentic whereas God may be simply graciously merciful.

Lord Jesus, help our pastors and church leaders to detest idolatry and detest becoming ministers hired for selfish interests of those who can pay.

PRAY AGAINST:
* Every agenda of the devil contending against Christian homes
