TOPIC: Love and Trust
Today’s Reading
1 Samuel 1:12-28
Hannah said, “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” – 1 Samuel 1:27-28 (NIV)
Shortly after I was born, my mother became ill and was prescribed a potent medication that severely impaired her ability to focus. But that didn’t stop her from sharing Christ with me. And she always encouraged me in my studies and cheered me on in sports, even while dealing with her pain and debilitating condition. She always reached out to me physically and emotionally. When it was time for me to leave home, it was very difficult for Mom; but she trusted that God would guide me in the way I should go.
Hannah is a great example of this kind of love and trust. After she cried out to the Lord, God blessed her with a baby boy, Samuel. And Hannah kept her commitment to devote her son to God. Though she loved Samuel, she was willing to step aside and let him grow with God. Hannah showed her devoted and sacrificial love both in her desire to have a child and in her willingness to give the child to the Lord’s work. Hannah’s love is an example of what it looks like to support and also let go. It’s not easy letting go; but if we trust and have faith in the Lord, all will be well.
