Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.
Bible Reading
Acts 18:18-28
18 Now Paul, when he had remained many days longer, took leave of the brothers and sisters and sailed away to Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. [a]Paul first had his hair cut at Cenchrea, for he was keeping a vow. 19 They came to Ephesus, and he left them there. Now he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not consent, 21 but took leave of them and said, “I will return to you again if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus.
22 When he had landed in Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church, and went down to Antioch.
23 And after spending some time there, he left and passed successively through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24 Now a Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, [b]an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was proficient in the Scriptures. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was accurately speaking and teaching things about Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; 26 and [c]he began speaking boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately to him. 27 And when he wanted to go across to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly [d]helped those who had believed through grace, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the [e]Christ.
Meditation Question
► Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
► Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
God’s will was a big factor in every decision in Paul’s life and service (Acts 18:21). Note that he came back to Antioch (his home Church), where he spent considerable time probably to give account of his work so far (Acts 18:22-23). For revival to come in our time, the discipline of being under authority of the Church, Para-church organisation, or individuals who, in spite of great anointing on our lives, exercise spiritual oversight on us, cannot be over-emphasized.
Notice the people Paul left behind to continue the work in Ephesus (Acts 18:23-28). It is important that we endeavour to raise committed and reliable people who can continue the ministry in our absence (2 Timothy 2:2).
What were the qualities of Apollos and the deficiency of his teaching (Acts 18:24-26a)? What can we learn from Aquila and Priscilla on how to help people like him (Acts 18:26b-27)? Like Apollos, many young people around us are willing to learn. If we open our hearts and our homes to them and give godly counsel, they will become assets to the mission of God, as Apollos later became in Ephesus, Achaia and Corinth (Acts 18:28; 1 Corinthians 16:12, Titus 3:13).
