Notice the source of Jephthah’s victory (Judges 11:29). God was with Jephthah as His Spirit descended on him, moved him to face the Ammonites. Was it then necessary for Jephthah to make such a rash vow (Judges 11:30-31)? Was Jephthah desperate for success because he had been rejected and wanted to prove himself? We may never know why he made such a vow apparently without thinking. However, one of the lessons that this teaches us is not to be too quick to make vows. It is also important that we do not get pressured into making vows we have not thought through. When we find ourselves in gatherings where people are being manipulated to give as we have in some of our gatherings, it is important to take time to think and pray.
His daughter was willing to lay down her life and her future as the sacrifice to fulfil her father’s promise. Even though human sacrifice was forbidden, many scholars believe she was offered by Jephthah as a burnt offering. However, because God forbids human sacrifice (Leviticus 18:21) others believe she was ransomed (cf. Leviticus 27:1-8) but consecrated to God in a state of perpetual virginity. That meant an end to Jephthah’s lineage being his only child. Whichever, his keeping to his vow shows his integrity and a sense of commitment to God (Ecclesiastes 5:4-6).
