OPENING PRAYER: Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name
SCRIPTURE READING – Acts 12:1-11

Why did Herod persecute the church (Acts 12:30)? The church has suffered and is still going through persecution for various reasons. At times, the reason may not even be clear. But we can be sure that nothing happens to us without God’s knowledge (Matthew 10:28-31).
Notice in Acts 12:5-7 the powerful effect of prayer. Despite the overwhelming odds stacked against Peter, the prayer of the church reached the throne of God, and in response, He dispatched His angel to rescue Peter. This episode reminds us to never underestimate the impact of our prayers. Our heavenly Father hears us and is actively involved in our lives. When we find ourselves in seemingly impossible situations, let us remember that nothing is impossible to our God. His deliverance may come in ways we never imagined. We must remain open, receptive and obedient to His guidance and intervention.
But one may wonder why the Lord permitted James to be killed but delivered Peter. Yes, the church prayed earnestly (Acts 12:5), but they must have prayed for James too. Our God is sovereign. His programme is different for each of His children. He has the prerogative to call us home at His appointed time and in whatever manner He chooses.
CLOSING PRAYER
Ask God to give you the strength and courage to trust Him even when you don’t see any way out of the challenges confronting you.
