OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, grant me spiritual insight into the truth of your word as I study it.
SCRIPTURE READING – Acts 11:19-30
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION:
► Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Persecution is usually synonymous with hardships. Notice however, a positive effect of persecution on Jesus’ followers and the spread of the Gospel. At first, the disciples who went to the Gentile regions preached only to Jews (Acts 11:19). Will you call it discrimination, ignorance, or tradition? The mission to Antioch was undertaken by ordinary Christians. They were not apostles or some prominent members, but they allowed God to use them. Notice the result (Acts 11:21).
Every new born baby needs food and nurture (1 Peter 2: 2). This is why the Church in Jerusalem sends Barnabas to the newly converted Gentiles. How would you describe Barnabas (Acts 11:22-24;Acts 4:36-37)? Notice the impact of his presence and mission in Antioch (Acts 11:24b).
Barnabas went to look for Paul to bring him to Antioch. Many servants of God do not like to involve others in their ministry despite the workload. What could be some reasons for this?
In Antioch, believers were first called Christians; Christ’s people (Acts 11:26). Why do you think the people gave them this ‘nickname’? Sadly, today, we hear believers introducing themselves more by their titles or their denominations instead of firstly calling themselves Christians or Disciples of Christ.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
CLOSING PRAYER:
Thank you, Lord, for all my ‘Barnabas’ in the faith. Help me to be an effective mentor to the younger generation of believers.
