TOPIC: The Lord was with the men of Judah
OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Judges 1:17-36
QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION:
► Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
► Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Reflect on the victory that God gave the men of Judah and Simeon and number of cities they took and destroyed (Judges 1:17-18). As we noted yesterday, there is indeed strength in unity! Both tribes working together won several victories because God was their strength (Judges 1:2). Their partnership remained solid.
Why did various tribes fail to drive some of the people out from their lands (Judges 1:19)? See Judges 2:2-3; Judges 3:4 for the actual reasons. Although chariots with iron served as an advantage to the Canaanites, the God who defeated Egypt’s vast and sophisticated army was ready to do the same for Israel in the case of the Canaanites! Compare their failure with the exploit of Caleb (Judges 1:20, see his resolve in Joshua 14:12). He dispossessed the Anakims of their land, the same Anakims the spies considered unconquerable (Numbers 13:31-33). The problem is us and not our all-powerful and ever faithful God.
The tribes subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, a compromise. Living with the people posed a great danger to their faith and worship of God. What warning was given in Exodus 23:31-33 that is applicable to us who live in the world and are yet not of it (2 Corinthians 6: 14-18)?
