TOPIC: A Sign of Grace
Today’s Reading
Psalm 8:1-9
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. – Psalm 8:1 (NIV)
After the sudden and unexpected loss of my pregnant daughter, my heart was broken. Gone were the plans and great joy we had anticipated. The shock and loss have been at times overwhelming.
As Mother’s Day approached, only a few weeks after my daughter died, my heart was still heavy. Then, as I looked out the window, I saw a brilliant pink sky! Because my daughter’s favorite color was pink, I wept. I felt that God had painted the sky that morning for me as a gift of grace and compassion. My Brittany was safe and sound with God now.
I have always been enthralled by the beauty of nature. I am in awe when I look out onto a vast blue sea from a hot sandy shore. Taking in the gorgeous red, gold, and orange leaves of rural Pennsylvania in autumn fills my heart with wonder.
The Bible says that through creation, God’s divine nature and eternal power are on display. It is often while beholding nature that I feel most closely connected to God.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, creator and giver of all good gifts, thank you for your personal love and care for each of us — especially in our times of suffering. Amen.
Thought for the Day
In the beauty of creation I can find God’s comforting presence.
