And they brought Him [Jesus] to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. And they crucified Him and divided His garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified Him. And the inscription of the charge against Him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with Him they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left. (Mark 15:22-27)
This part of Mark reminds me of an altarpiece—the beautiful, detailed paintings that you sometimes see in a great church, right above the altar.

In the center of everything, we see Jesus—naked, suffering, hanging from a cross. This is the true King of Israel—God Himself, come to save His people with His own blood (see Isaiah 44:6). On either side of Him are His courtiers—two robbers, fit companions for the Savior of sinners. At His feet are His executioners, ignoring their Savior while they gamble for His clothes.
And where are we, in this picture? If we have any sense, on our knees. For this is Jesus, who loves us so much He willingly chooses to give His life for us—and never mind the shame, never mind the pain. He wants us for His own, and He will do whatever is necessary to bring us home with Him to God His Father. By His death He will set us free from death; and when He rises from the dead, He will raise us, too, and give us everlasting life—to everyone who trusts in Him.
WE PRAY: Dear Jesus, thank You. Amen.
