Opening Prayer: Sanctify my life dear Lord as I study your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Acts 2: 22–36
Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
Outline: Peter continued his address to the people at Pentecost. He expounded the Scripture on the prediction, fulfilment and significance of Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension. The fact of Christ’s death and resurrection is a fundamental pillar of our faith (1 Corinthians 15:14, 17–19). Peter’s message shows that it was a real historical event that cannot be refuted.
Read vv.22–24 again, what in your understanding is Peter’s point of argument here? The audience knew all the facts about Christ’s life, death and resurrection (v.22). As Peter was preaching, the news about his death and resurrection was still very fresh, just about two–month–old (v.32). If Peter’s argument were not true, the crowd would have refuted it.
Note how Peter quoted from the Old Testament profusely to support his argument (vv.25–28; 34–35). He used facts from Jewish Scripture, which the audience were familiar with (vv.29–32), to explain what they need to know about Christ (v.36). It is best to rely on the Word of God rather than human and philosophical arguments in trying to bring others to the knowledge and lordship of Christ.
Notice the greatest proof of Jesus’ Messiahship in vv.32–33. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which his disciples have just experienced, is another proof.
