Notice the two ways of asking from God in today’s passage (Matthew 8:2,6)? The centurion knew what authority is all about, being a man who gives orders to people, expects and receives prompt obedience. He based his faith on the authority of Jesus and expressed his confidence in Him. He knows that all He needed was for Jesus to give the instruction and all will be well.
On the other hand, the leper knows that Jesus can do anything. However, there are some things He chooses not to do, hence, his “if” statement in Matthew 8:2, which recognizes the sovereignty of God. Which one do we need in our relationship with God? Both!
Some of today’s preachers would want people to instruct and command God about what He should and should not do. There is a place for praying that if God is willing, He should respond to a situation in a particular way. But then we should always come to Him in total trust and confidence that even if He does not answer our prayers in the way we desire, it is not because there is something wrong with Him or with us. It is just because that is His best for us at that time.
