Scripture Union Daily Guide 21st January 2025 – OUTLINE
Notice the conditions outlined for people who wanted to become Nazarites in Numbers 6:1–8. Each of the three prohibitions carried a special message. Abstention from wine and any fermented drink was indicative of their self-denial. They must have control of their appetite. Secondly, leaving their hair unshaved communicated to people in their community that they were under a special vow. Appearance matters.
Finally, their staying away from dead bodies was a demonstration of our separation from death – the effect of sin. The purpose for all these prohibitions was that God wanted a group of leaders who were wholly devoted to Him. Note also that the Nazarite vow was a special type of voluntary devotion. A person could take it for a limited period or for a lifetime. All believers are called to be totally devoted and separated unto the Lord and bear joyful witness to the saving acts of God (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:9).
Read Numbers 6:22-27 again and notice what the priestly blessing says about God’s desire for His people? The pronouncement of this blessing placed God’s covenant name, the Lord, on the people.
Have you ever made a special vow to the Lord (e.g., for lent, marriage, or New Year)? How did you prove your seriousness about such vow?
