Read The Upper Room Devotional 7th November 2024 written by Lenita Reeves (Maryland, USA)
TOPIC: Humility
TODAY’S READING
Genesis 33:1-11
[Jacob] himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother. – Genesis 33:3 (NIV)
TODAY’S MESSAGE
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted saying them. I shook with anger from our argument, but I knew I needed to apologize to my husband. But I struggled to apologize because of my pride.
In the Bible, Jacob overcame his pride. He had stolen his brother Esau’s birthright, and when he saw Esau coming with 400 men, he knew he was in trouble — just like I knew I was in trouble after my argument. So Jacob humbled himself. He bowed seven times, as did his maids, wives, and children. They all humbled themselves because they needed mercy.
This story in Genesis reminded me that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Pet. 5:5, NRSVUE). I didn’t bow to the ground in front of my husband, but I did bow my heart and put what God wanted above my pride.
Remembering that mending a relationship requires humility can help us overcome our pride. Humility helps us reconcile broken relationships. Let’s rely on God’s grace to stay humble.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Merciful God, help us to walk in humility and open our hearts to your will for us. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
