Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th November 2024 (Wednesday) Devotional Message
TOPIC: A PROUD KING HUMBLED
OPEN PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
Question(s) for Reflection
* Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
* Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Daniel 4:19-37
Gifted men are sometimes tempted to attribute their achievements or success to themselves. King Nebuchadnezzar made this mistake in today’s passage. Reflect on what he said in v.30. God lovingly and graciously revealed the impending doom to him in a dream. He was warned by Daniel who interpreted his dream (vs.24-27). Did he heed the warning (vs.29,30)?
God’s patience is meant to lead us to repentance. Because king Nebuchadnezzar overlooked God’s warning, notice what happened to him (vs.31-33). He was reduced to an animal. God is loving and kind but the proud must learn to walk humbly before Him. See what happened to him (v.36) when he repented by humbly admitting the awesomeness of God (vs.34,35) and what he did (vs.34 and 37a).
The God of judgment reserves mercy for the penitent. Leaders and all in positions of authority whether in public office, the church or home must know that whatever we are, is purely by God’s grace and all glory should be given to Him.
Practice/Word Application
And so? Meditate on v.37b. Pride changed Lucifer to Satan and sent him out of heaven. Do something about your pride today (Proverbs 16:18).
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
O Lord, deliver me from pride and hardness of heart. Help me to heed your warning.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Exodus 3:12
“And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.”
