Scripture Union Daily Guide 10th October 2024 – MESSAGE
The instruction to King Saul was clear (v.3). He was to destroy the Amalekites and God explained the reason for it (v.2). Genocide is what we would call it today but let us make no mistake about it – God punishes sin. That is the story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. This is because He is absolutely pure and holy and cannot tolerate sin in any shape or form.
King Saul had no problem defeating the Amalekites (vs.7-8). As to destroying them completely, and all their animals as God commanded, however, he had his own ideas (v.9); and it was not out of compassion but greed. Greed or covetousness is destructive (Luke 12:15 cf. Joshua 7:20-26). Notice what he did when he was caught out (vs.13-15).
Do you readily admit your fault, confess, and seek forgiveness, or do you make excuses to justify yourself? You are not the first. Adam set that bad example in the Garden of Eden when he blamed God who gave him the woman and the woman who gave him the fruit to eat! Instead of finding excuses for our wrongdoings, what should always be our course of action (Proverbs 28:13)?
