TOPIC: The Unseen Hand
Today’s Reading
Colossians 1:15-17
[Christ] is before all things, and in him all things hold together. – Colossians 1:17 (NIV)
One day in the park I noticed a leaf dancing freely in the air. The leaf would rise to about seven feet, flit about, and glide down within inches of the ground. Then it would hover and bob for several minutes as if moved by an unseen hand. This went on for over an hour. I knew it must be suspended by a spider web, but I could not see it.
Watching this leaf reminded me that when Christ went back to heaven, he sent us the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gives us comfort and strength and helps us to choose God’s path.
When I feel as if the world has taken control of my life, I have to trust in the One who holds all things in place — God, the Creator. The apostle Paul tells us, “We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Cor. 4:18). No, I cannot see God; I cannot reach out and touch God. But God’s Holy Spirit can dwell with us, lifting our spirits and bringing us life.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, help us to trust you, even when we cannot see where you are leading us. Amen.
