God’s threat of punishment for the wicked is never an idle one, and we ignore it to our peril. The king and the people of Judah refused to heed God’s warning and brought calamity on their own heads. The Babylonian army besieged Jerusalem and penetrated it. They killed the princes in the presence of their father (v.6), put out the King’s eyes (v.7), and sacked the city completely. What other things happened to the King of Judah (vv.7–8).
If the king had obeyed God’s word and surrendered to the Babylonians, this national disaster would have been averted. Disobedience of God’s command is dangerous and has severe consequences. The fall of Judah is a lesson to all present leaders and a warning that what befell Judah can happen to us if we follow the same path of disobedience and godlessness.
King Nebuchadnezzar personally instructed his officers to take care of Jeremiah and ensure his safety and wellbeing. God never forgets his faithful servants even in times of trials and national upheavals. He can be trusted to ensure our safety and welfare.
God also rewarded Ebed–Melech, the Ethiopian who risked his own life to save Jeremiah when Jerusalem fell. Find out the reason in v.18. Whatever we do to help God’s servants will be rewarded.
