Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 May 2024 – Qualities of Acceptable Offering

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 May 2024 (Wednesday) Devotional Message

TOPIC: Qualities of Acceptable Offering

OPENING PRAYER: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.

INTRODUCTION TO LEVITICUS
It is generally agreed that Moses, the Law giver, wrote Leviticus. The phrase “and the Lord spoke to Moses” is repeated several times throughout the book thus giving us the assurance that the instructions were supplied by Moses as he received them from the Lord (1:1; 4:1; 27:1). The purpose of the book was to give Israel guidance on how sinful people can maintain holy character and ethical behaviours, as well as the sacrifices and rituals that were necessary for relating with the Holy God, who now resides among them symbolically in the tent of meeting (1:1).

The main message of Leviticus is the holiness of God (11:44-45; 19:2). Many of these laws and rituals may not apply directly to us again because Jesus has opened a new way to God for us by offering Himself as the final and perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 10:14). However, as we study Leviticus, we would learn about the nature of the God we worship, right lifestyles expected of us, and more importantly to appreciate the price that Jesus paid on our behalf.

SCRIPTURE READING: LEVITICUS 1:1-17

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
* Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 May 2024 – MESSAGE

The burnt offering is one of five offerings that God commanded in Leviticus. It was for general atonement for sin and expression of devotion to God. What is the essential qualification of an animal that can be used for this offering (vs.3, 10)? What does this teach us about our services/giving to God? Read vs.8&9, 12 &13 and 17 again. Note that the entire animal was burnt on the altar. What is the implication of this for us?

The offering was affordable for everyone. The animal for the offering could be a bull, sheep, goat, dove or pigeon. This teaches us that what matters is not the size but the quality of our offering/services and our intentions.

The one offering the sacrifice lays his hand on the head of the animal, thus, identifying with the animal as his substitute (v.4). This shows that we cannot atone for our sins by ourselves. This offering foreshadows the sacrifice of Christ, the perfect, sinless Lamb of God, to atone for our sins as required by the Holy God (John 1:29). Burning the entire animal signifies complete devotion and yielding of our lives to God as an offering laid on the altar (Romans 12:1).

Practice/Word Application
Thought: Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
Your heart, does the spirit control?
You can only be blest and have peace and sweet rest,
As you yield Him your body and soul!

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
