Scripture Union Daily Guide 23 May 2024 – MESSAGE
Every city in ancient time has a watchtower manned by watchmen whose duty is to alert the city in case of impending danger. The imagery in this passage is that of a watchman looking out from the watchtower of Zion. He sees someone coming from the direction of Edom. He then asks questions (vs.1-2). Surprisingly, it was God who answered him. God also used the imagery of winepress (v.3).
Since grapes are red, anyone who treads the winepress will be stained with red, depicting blood. Treading the winepress is, therefore, a figure of divine judgment. Like Edom, God will judge all the nations that exploited and oppressed His people (vs.3-6 cf. 34:5-8).
Right now, the church is groaning under oppression, suppression, and persecution from the world, but God will avenge her. Our Lord will bring all the enemies of the church to judgment (Revelation 19:13-18).
What do vs.7-9 and 11-14 teach us about God? Read v.10 again. Why do we make God angry despite His love for us?
Do you need God’s intervention or deliverance desperately? You can appeal to His fatherhood, generosity, and compassion (vs.15-19)!
