Scripture Union Daily Guide 1 May 2020 – The Fear of the Lord

Scripture Union Daily Guide 1 May 2020

Topic: The fear of the Lord

Opening Prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Proverbs 1:1–19

Introduction to the book of PROVERBS
The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings intended to serve as a guide for successful living. It deals with a variety of topics that have to do with practical, down to earth, and everyday concerns. Any thoughtful reader will be impressed to find that God cares about the minute details of our lives. The wise sayings are not meant to give mere head knowledge, but to equip us with skills to work out that knowledge in our daily lives.

Most of the Book is attributed to King Solomon as the author. The sayings are the fruit of experience, but Solomon had weaknesses in his personal life, like other writers and leaders. May the Holy Spirit use these readings to lead us to respond in reverence, trust, worship and obedience as we serve the Lord.

Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Outline: Read through vv.2–6 again and note the various ways the Book can help you. The foundation is of the greatest importance when one sets out to build a house. If the foundation is weak or faulty, no matter how magnificent the building may appear, it will not be able to withstand the forces of nature, as in the parable of wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24–27).

In v.7, we have the sure foundation for knowledge and wisdom that will be of lasting profit to anybody. Can you think of a recent example of what happened when much knowledge was not accompanied by the fear of the Lord? In these days of the internet and social media, there is no shortage of voices seeking the attention of any young person (vv.8–11).

The choice that is made will determine the end of each person, young or old. The company we keep will often determine our attitudes and priorities in life. How is Solomon’s advice here is reinforced in 1 Corinthians 15:33–34?

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application
• And so? Who are your closest friends? How are they influencing you? And how are you influencing them?

Prayer
• Lord, please teach me to listen to godly advice and desist from keeping company of those who will lead me astray.
• Pray against causes of climate change, war and other factors that could lead to famine and other disasters.
