Scripture Union Daily Guide 31 July 2023 MESSAGE:
Must I give in to lustful passions just because I am free to do it? Observe how Paul adapts the two sayings used by the Corinthians to exhort them not to use their liberty as a license to sin (vs.12-13). How will it affect us and the people around us when we give free rein to the desires of our sinful nature or put ourselves into the power of our bodily appetites? If we indulge in too much food, we satisfy our flesh, but the consequence can be ill health.
Note how much honour the Lord attributes to the human body (v.15). To be members of Christ’s body is great enough but more so, the Lord will also raise us up as He raised up Christ. Notice what we are commanded to do in v.18a and why (vs.18b-20)? Do we realise how much it cost God the Father to purchase our bodies? So, how we use our bodies matters to God. Our bodies are not meant for immorality but for the Lord! What are the things that you allow in your body, the temple or habitation of the Holy Spirit – through your eyes, ears, mouth, hands, feet, heart…?
Practice/Word Application
So what? It is a sad fact today that a great number of people, young and old, even fervent Christians engage in sex outside of marriage. Will you follow the example of Joseph and say, ‘No’ to sexual immorality (Genesis 39:7-21)?
