Read carefully through vs.14-17. The apostle Paul invites the Corinthian Christians to imitate him (v.16; 11:1). Find out from these verses the kind of attitudes he has that should be imitated. He wants them to remember the things he taught them, by word and example, when he was among them.
There is nothing that impacts followers than a leader with character. It has been said variously that people don’t hear what we say until they see it lived out in you. Also notice his encouraging words about Timothy. This should inform Christian leaders on the way to disciple younger believers to promote the cause of the Gospel. Practical demonstration of love can build up our disciples better than mere words.
Read v.20 slowly and thoughtfully. Today’s generation enjoys hearing “motivational” talks, better with American pronunciation. It hardly takes time to analyse these talks, neither does it examine the lives of those who present these messages. As a result, people are easily carried away by false teachers and prophets. We must be grounded in the Word so we are not carried away by their smooth words. See also Romans 14:17.
There is a lesson for us in v.19 on how Paul rested his plan on the will of God. Read James 4:13-15.
