Vs.1-7, 22-31 give us a graphic picture of the priestly garment which the priests wore while serving in the holy place. Priests were not ordinary men in the society, rather they were holy people, consecrated and set apart to offer sacrifices and do other works in the tent or temple of God.
Our priestly garment today is no longer clothing materials, though we should dress properly daily and while serving the Lord. However, our garment is the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Today, every Christian is a royal priesthood, alive and called to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to offer acceptable sacrifices unto God (1 Peter 1:14-15; 2:5,9; Revelation 1:6). We do not need special garment to show we are serving the Lord. Rather, we should cover ourselves as holy people with the righteousness of Jesus Christ and good works (Matthew 5:16).
The ephod and the breastplate were two very important parts of the priestly clothing (vs.2, 8). Engraved on twelve precious stones were the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, fastened to these two garments (vs.6,14). The memorial stones were a reminder that the priest represented all the people before God. See also our role as royal priests in 1 Timothy 2:1-2.
