Scripture Union Daily Guide 28th January 2023 MESSAGE

God’s mercies in the past do three things for us. They provide cause for ongoing praise (v.3a); they help us encourage others (v.3b, 5b, 9-10); and they give us the confidence to trust Him for present dangers and future troubles (v.17). However, a right relationship with God is an absolute essential. It is not just a matter of burnt sacrifices and burnt offerings (v.6), or what is often emphasized nowadays, the unfailing payment of our tithes. We must hear and do what God tells us (v.8).

Step by step, God increases our knowledge of His love and grace steadily through the Bible. The process did not come to completion until God came down to earth in human flesh (Hebrews 1:1-2). Bible scholars call it “progressive revelation.” We now have the benefit of the exemplary life of Jesus Christ, His teachings, His death, and His resurrection.

Therefore, we should not go back to live at the level of the saints of old who lacked this understanding. This is why we must not follow the example of cursing our enemies as we see frequently in the psalms and the prophets (vs.14-15; Psalm 35:4-7; Jeremiah 18:21-22). Instead, we should follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and his disciples in the New Testament (e.g. Matthew 5:43-48; Romans 12:14).

HYMN: All hail the power of Jesus’ name!

1 All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.

2 Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God,
Who from His altar call;
Extol the Stem of Jesse’s rod,
And crown Him Lord of all.
Extol the Stem of Jesse’s rod,
And crown Him Lord of all.

3 Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race,
Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

4 Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
The wormwood and the gall,
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
And crown Him Lord of all.
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
And crown Him Lord of all.

5 Let every tribe and every tongue
Before Him prostrate fall
And shout in universal song
The crownèd Lord of all.
And shout in universal song
The crownèd Lord of all.

6 O that, with yonder sacred throng,
We at His feet may fall,
Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all,
Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all!
