OPENING PRAYER: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Revelation 3:1‐6

Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 August 2022 MESSAGE

The church in Sardis is diagnosed as “having a reputation of being alive but is dead” (v.1) and those who are asleep are about to die (vs.2‐3)! What makes a church dead? See Colossians 3:5‐10 for a hint! The depth of Sardis’s backslidden state requires a mighty shake‐up.

If that is the description of any church or individual Christian, the treatment is to wake up! ‐ and v.3 shows how. The church in Africa is reportedly growing?numerically, that is. Does this growth reflect a spiritual awakening? As important as numbers are, our faith should reflect changed lives.

Lots of activities without fruit bearing makes us ineffective and unproductive (See 2 Peter 1:5‐9). A Ghanaian proverb says, “There is no reward for unfinished work,” and that is true to life. Of what benefit is a race that does not get to the finishing line?

While starting is appropriate, finishing is even more important and beneficial; hence Scripture regularly reminds us not only to begin the Christian race but to finish it successfully.

Check how Paul finished his (2 Timothy 4:7) Notice that although there is nothing to commend the church in Sardis for, the Lord, however, does not forget “the few people who have not soiled their clothes” (v.4) ‐ i.e. those who do not live in sin (v.5). Identify five rewards awaiting such people.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 August 2022 Closing Prayer
• Check your personal life. Which areas need waking up? Pray that the Lord will bring showers of true revival.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Philippians 4:19 ‐ 20
