The Upper Room 31 May 2022 Daily Devotional MESSAGE
The other night at our evening prayer time, Sister Alegría and I were interrupted by a beetle that was attracted to our hand-held light. The inch-long creature kept landing on our necks, arms, and legs with an unpleasant tickle. We brushed the beetle away, but it was nearly impossible to concentrate on our scripture readings. The beetle was not a biting insect, so I didn’t want to kill it — though I was tempted. I caught it in my hand and released it outside. Finally, we could pray in peace.
This experience is a helpful metaphor for dealing with problems that arise in my life. Sin, temptation, worries, and even trivial things can distract me from God during worship and prayer, as well as keep me from living a faithful life. When that happens, instead of just ignoring my problems or trying to brush them away, I would do well to face the challenges straight on and turn them over to God.
God has the power to resolve them and guide me in what steps I may need to take. The process may be difficult, but it is worthwhile. When we give God not only our praise but also our problems, our faith will be strengthened and we can regain a sense of peace.
TODAY’S PRAYER
All-powerful God, help us to let go of our problems and distractions so we can focus on you and what’s really important in life. Amen.
