Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 April 2022 MESSAGE
We experience it all in Africa. We experienced autocratic government of the likes of Idi Amin (Uganda), Mobutu Sese Seko (DR Congo) and Sanni Abacha (Nigeria). We all welcome democracy where the voice of the people prevails in decision making. What can you identify as the strengths and weaknesses of both from this passage? Pilate had the chance to use the power bestowed on him to do justice in favour of Christ, but the voice of the crowd prevailed on him (vs.18, 22‐25).
On many occasions, democracy helps to prevent injustice, but it is often ‘demoncracy’ as in this case, promoting injustice. Pilate himself was appalled he asked thrice: “Why? What crime has he committed? ?.” (v.22). The will of the Father is for the Son to die, that He may provide the way of salvation to mankind. However, this occasion reveals the depth of wickedness in human hearts, both the rulers and the ruled.
We are daily faced with matters of injustice in our countries. What can we learn from the Lord’s composure in the midst of the arguments? When He seems to be silent in our situation today, do we take offence?
Practice/Word Application
And So? Jesus was turned over to them to do as they wished. There is power in majority! Right?
