The Upper Room 25 January 2022 Devotional MESSAGE
One day my husband asked me if I had seen his notepad. I suggested that he check under the cushion of his favorite chair, where things often slide out of sight. He assured me that he had already looked there, but I decided to check again in case the notebook had slipped too deep for his larger hands to reach. I pulled off the seat cushion and found a few crumbs. I put my hand deeper into the chair and pulled out an empty bag, a few old wrappers, some wadded up tissue, several old magazines, and finally a fork — but no notebook.
My search in the chair reminded me of the importance of searching my heart and life. The chair looked clean at first glance. It took a deep search to find the hidden items lurking in the depths. Similarly, others may take a superficial glance at me and not see the crumbs of sinful acts and emotions that hide below the surface.
The psalmist begged God to search him and know his heart and anxious thoughts. I need to allow God’s light to shine into the corners of my heart too. God will help me to clean up whatever is there.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for your steadfast love. Search our hearts and lives and help us always to be obedient to you. Amen.

God’s light can illumine even the darkest corners of my life.
