The Upper Room 12 December 2021 Devotional Message

Just 14 days before Christmas, our father died. Christmas for our family will never be the same again. While everyone is celebrating, having reunions, and exchanging gifts, I don’t know how Christmas is going to be joyful for my family and me. As I gaze at the twinkling lights on our Christmas tree, my eyes well up with tears. Papa’s passing was a shock to us. No words can describe our sadness. My memories of Papa are clear in my mind, but sometimes memories aren’t enough to soothe the pain. When my friends and colleagues ask me how I am doing, I can’t really say I’m okay; all I can say is that I’m still holding firmly to God.

But even as I grieve,

I will still celebrate Christmas. After all, the name Emmanuel means “God is with us.” Jesus has felt the pain that we feel; I believe that’s why his presence gives me peace during my grieving. And while grieving lasts a long time, I know I’m not alone because God holds on to me even tighter. Though I lost my loving earthly father, my heavenly Father will carry me — this Christmas and each day of my life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank you for the peace that you give us and the assurance that you are with us in our painful moments. Comfort all who grieve during this Christmas season. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When we are most in need, God is closer than ever.

PRAYER FOCUS
Those grieving at Christmas
