Today’s Bible Verse

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”James 1:2-3 (NIV)

Let’s be honest: James 1:2 is a hard verse to swallow when you are actually in the middle of a trial.

When your car breaks down, your finances are tight, or your heart is hurting, “pure joy” is usually the last thing you feel. We often think of joy as a happy feeling that depends on everything going perfectly in our lives.

But biblical joy isn’t a feeling—it is a choice.

James doesn’t tell us to pretend our pain isn’t real. He tells us to consider it joy. Joy is an anchor that keeps us steady when the storms of life hit. It is the quiet, immovable confidence that God is using even the messy, painful, and frustrating parts of our lives to build something beautiful in us: perseverance, character, and deep faith.

You don’t have to be joyful about the trial, but you can find joy in the trial because you know God is still working. He is still on the throne, His promises are still true, and He is close to the brokenhearted.

Today’s Reflection

What is one small blessing or “glimmer of grace” you can thank God for today, even in the middle of a difficult circumstance?

A Thursday Prayer for Joy

A Prayer for Strength and Joy in Hard Times

Lord, bless my heart with Your true, supernatural joy today.

I admit that it is hard to feel joyful when life feels messy and unpredictable. But I know that my joy doesn’t depend on my circumstances—it depends on Your unchanging love. I ask that You would give me a fresh perspective on the trials I am facing.

Show me how You are working in my life through these challenges. Help me to look past my problems and fix my eyes on Your promises. Thank You for never leaving my side.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
