TOPIC: No Greater Love
TODAY’S READING
1 John 3:16-24
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. – John 15:13 (NIV)
TODAY’S MESSAGE
Sometimes we have difficulty understanding the great love our Savior has for each one of us. Jesus will likely not ask us to die for our friends, yet he does ask us to love one another as he loved us.
I experienced that kind of love in my life when I had a serious health problem that prevented me from taking care of myself upon discharge from the hospital. Expecting I would need help for only a few months, my aunt moved in with me. But over a year later, I still need her help.
As I meditated on the scripture above, I realized that my aunt has truly shown her love by laying down her life for me. By moving in with me to care for me, she has left behind her home of over 50 years, her friends, her favorite restaurants, her doctors, her bank, her familiar stores, and her neighbors. She has continued to care for me even as she deals with her own cancer diagnosis and treatment. She has sacrificed much. My aunt is living out the scripture, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
TODAY’S PRAYER
Loving God, help us to be sensitive to the needs of those around us so that we can show your sacrificial love to others. Remind us to show gratitude to those who love us. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
How will I show sacrificial love to someone today?
