Beneath my quiet persona I was an angry, bitter teen. I resented that I had been born into a highly dysfunctional family. I saw other healthy families and wondered why mine was not like that.
For years, even after I came to Christ as a young adult, I still wrestled with those feelings of anger and bitterness. But the Psalms gave me a way to deal with my emotions. Through these beautifully honest poems and songs, I saw many of my emotions displayed by King David. He got angry at his enemies. At times he was bitter about the circumstances of his life.
I was shocked at how vocal David was with God about how he felt.
But I was also comforted. I saw that there is no emotion I cannot express to our loving Father. God can handle whatever I have to say and always listens to me.
By letting my feelings be known to God and releasing them, I found that God was able to heal my hurting heart and transform my anger and bitterness into peace, contentment, and even joy. God, who is patient and kind, longs to heal and transform us and will do so no matter how long it takes.
