Scanning My Life
Diane Boleyn (Iowa, USA)
Today’s Reading
2 Timothy 3:10-17
Every scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing mistakes, for correcting, and for training character, so that the person who belongs to God can be equipped to do everything that is good. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CEB)
A few years ago, a technician instructed me to lie on my back for a scan to evaluate my bone density. When I did, I felt as if my back were crooked. I adjusted my position until I felt comfortable and like my back was straight.
Following the test, the technician showed me the scan; I was surprised to see that my upper back was leaning to the right. My “straight” back was not straight at all. My perception of comfort and alignment was out of sync with the reality revealed by the scan.
This is also an easy mistake for me to make in my spiritual life. What I think is comfortable and right with respect to God’s plan and purpose may actually be misaligned. I have realized that it is important to check my thoughts and actions against the truth of God’s word regularly. Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 3:14-15 describe practical tools for examining and correcting our ways by studying the godly example of others and the words of scripture. These help me scan my life so I can stay correctly aligned in my faith.
