Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. – 1 Timothy 1:15 (NIV)
In his early life, John Newton was involved in the brutal and inhumane business of capturing and selling African slaves. However, through a series of harrowing experiences, he began to question the moral implications of his actions. During a violent storm at sea, he cried out to God for mercy, and his life was miraculously spared. This near-death encounter with the Divine sparked a deep spiritual awakening within him. But Newton’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. He spent years seeking God’s grace and forgiveness, wrestling with guilt and shame for his past actions.
Eventually, he found solace in the words of the Bible, particularly in Paul’s letter to Timothy: “I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life” (1 Tim. 1:16). Newton recognized that, even as the “worst” sinner, he was not beyond the reach of God’s love and redemption.
Everyone can experience God’s love and forgiveness. Like Newton, we may have moments of doubt, guilt, and shame, but through God’s love, we can find healing and restoration.
