2 Timothy 3:10-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
Over the last 30 years, my nursing career has taken me from working 12-hour shifts on my feet to an administrative role behind a desk. Over time, this more sedentary lifestyle has taken a toll on my physical and mental health. It became clear that I needed to incorporate a daily outdoor walk into my routine. Initially, I looked for any excuse I could think of to avoid these walks. Eventually though, I began looking forward to the fresh air and the sun on my face. My walks became one of the highlights of my day.
I recognized that being spiritually sedentary had similar effects. I had long been content to listen to sermons on Sunday then move through the rest of the week with little time spent studying the Bible or developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just as a daily walk nourishes my body, my daily devotional time nourishes my spirit.
For many years now, my mother has provided every member of our family with the current issue of The Upper Room. If she is unable to deliver it face-to-face, it shows up in the mailbox or on the front porch. These deliveries have played a huge role in my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I have learned what my mother has known all along: nourishing our spirit is vital for our health.
