Today’s Reading
John 10:11-18
You [Lord] know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. – Psalm 139:2 (NIV)
While looking through old photos, I came across one taken when I had gone to a family reunion with my then fiancé, Tom. Everyone was gathered for a family photo, and I was standing in the group beside Tom. At the last moment, realizing that I was not “officially” family, I quickly stepped aside. In the photo, people are facing forward, toward the photographer — all except Tom. He’s turned sideways, watching after me. After 53 years of marriage, I look at that photo and smile. All these years later, I am still blessed by a husband who is lovingly focused on me.
As wonderful as this is, scripture tells me that I have an even greater blessing. I have a heavenly Father who watches over my “coming and going both now and forevermore” (Ps. 121:8). This is an assurance to all who trust God. Even in difficult times or times without the support of others, we are never alone. Regardless of life’s circumstances, each of us can know that God sees us and cares for us with an everlasting love.
