Today’s Reading
Hebrews 13:1-3
I am going to send an angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. – Exodus 23:20 (NRSVUE)
I had just returned home from rehab after having total hip replacement surgery. I live in an independent apartment in a retirement community, and there were many things I could not do for myself. But a friend asked if she could shop for me. Another friend wheeled me in a wheelchair wherever I needed to go. A third offered to do my laundry. And some friends offered to pick me up for church. I believe they were angels sent by God to help me.
As I thought about all these folks who were angels to me, I wondered how many times I had missed being God’s angel for someone else. Even when I cannot physically do what they need done, I can always pray for them and their needs.
We all will have opportunities to help in many ways if we are alert to God’s guiding us to the needs of others. Each of us has talents and abilities which can be used to serve God by serving others. Ask God to guide you to the person for whom you can be an angel — and remember to thank God for the angels sent to help you.
Today’s Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for sending angels to help us. Show us where we can be helpful in return so that those in need can see your love through us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thought for the Day
