TOPIC: Spilling Over
Today’s Reading
Matthew 6:19-21
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. – Luke 6:38 (NIV)
In the desert of the American Southwest, low humidity requires that we stay hydrated, especially in warm weather. Drinking enough water is difficult but essential. One of my regular tasks is to fill ice-cube trays so that we can keep cool and not become overheated. As I pour water into the individual compartments of the trays, I try to fill each one with the same amount of liquid, but often the middle sections are less full than the ends.
One day while I was tilting a tray so that water flowed from one compartment to the next, it occurred to me that this is how we should live out our Christian faith. When there are areas in our lives in which we have more than we need, we can spill over into the lives of others and share with those who don’t have enough. My widowed mother set this example for my sister and me while we were growing up. Although she never earned much money, she shared her talents, time, and the little that we had with others. And when we had needs, others shared with us.
As I go about my daily tasks, I try to remember to look around and see whose life I can spill over into and bless. There is always someone with needs that I can meet.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, thank you for all the ways you provide for us. Help us to share our blessings with others. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
