TOPIC: Finding Peace
Today’s Reading
1 Peter 5:8-11
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” – John 14:8 (NIV)
Soon after my family and I moved to Kansas, where our relatives lived, my grandma — “Nanny” — passed away. My mom, brother, and I had been driving on rural roads when we received the news. I remember trying to comfort my brother and hearing the pain in my mom’s screams as she walked down the dirt road.
We stayed in the countryside for hours, and my repeated plea was for God to bring Nanny back to life. I could not believe she was gone. I was furious with God. I didn’t want to talk to anyone because no words could possibly be helpful or ease the heartache. I was in a dark place and felt like I had no need for God.
But my grandmother’s example reminded me to lean into the comforting arms of Jesus as I mourned her passing. Nanny demonstrated God’s love throughout my life and was an amazing example to everyone around her. It was a gift from God that I got to spend part of my life with her.
When I finally prayed, thanking God for putting Nanny in my life and for letting us see her a few more times before she passed, I felt peace in my heart. God gave me understanding and acceptance, and I was able to see past my own desires and continue to trust God. Even though I was still heartbroken, I knew God was with me.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Father, help us to look to you when we are downcast. Give us strength and the peace of your comforting embrace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thought for the Day
God will comfort me in my heartache.
