TODAY’S MESSAGE
My cellmate for the past eight months has been a 55-year-old man named Russ who suffers from moderate dementia. Having completed his sentence, Russ was released from prison last week with absolutely no support from anyone in the outside world. His future seems bleak.
During the time we shared our tiny prison cell, I cared for him as if he were my brother. It was not easy. I had to tell him when to eat, to walk him through his daily routine, and to share what little I have with him. But I also had the privilege of sharing my faith and being an example of how Christ calls us to live in Matthew 25.
Through this man who has been neglected by society, I learned so much about what it means to live as a Christian in humility, patience, and love — virtues that are hard to live by in this environment. As Russ left our cell for the last time, he thanked me for all I had done for him. But I know that I was richly blessed to be chosen by God to live out Christ’s love to someone who is “one of the least of these.”
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, continue to give us opportunities to treat others as we would treat you. Amen.
Thought for the Day
I will treat everyone with the same kindness and love I would show to Christ.
