TODAY’S READING
Colossians 1:9-14
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way. – Colossians 1:9-10 (NIV)
The Upper Room Daily Devotional 12th February 2023 MESSAGE
In 2019, I had the opportunity to teach a creative writing course for a group of accomplished expatriates who wanted to write about their experiences living in a foreign land. I didn’t know about the course until a few weeks before the start date, and I had not applied for the position. However, the program director called and asked me if I was interested in teaching the course. He and I had previously worked together, and he trusted my ability. He hoped I would accept the opportunity.
At first, I felt unfit and undeserving of the job. Was I qualified? Would I be able to stand before these important people? But it was a privilege to have been specially chosen, and that meant I had as much right to teach the course as anyone.
This reminds me of what God, through Jesus, has done for us. We are not worthy of God’s grace or forgiveness. God chooses us, freely gives us the gift of grace, and offers us the right to be children of God! Let us remain assured that by grace we are worthy for all that God has called us to do.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, sometimes we feel small, weak, and unworthy. Help us to remember that through your Son, Jesus, we are worthy. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Because God has called me, I am worthy.
PRAYER FOCUS
Someone starting a new job
